Tricia Thom

I work in porcelain on the wheel, seeking to express the fine surface and translucency of the material through simple, balanced forms.  Some surfaces are treated with bold calligraphic, gestural brush marks, contrasting with a conformity of form; more recent work has explored the use of metallic golds and tin reds, introducing a more varied approach to surface treatment and allowing for a play on groupings and juxtapositions of pieces.
For me, teapots, moon jars and vessels are symbolic of community and ritual, objects so closely related to every-day use that can be celebrated for their form as well as function
